The Damned: Live Performances - 1998

The list of shows for 1998 is believed to be complete (lists for some years are very much 'work in progress').

Thursday 10 December - The Forum, Kentish Town, London

Set: I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Dozen Girls, Melody Lee, Plan 9 Channel 7, Wait For The Blackout, Shadow of Love, Disco Man, Neat Neat Neat, Curtain Call, Noise Noise Noise, Looking At You. encore - New Rose, Eloise, Smash It Up, Happy Talk.

Comments: Support from Jolt. Last gig with Garry Dreadful on drums. A short rendition of 'Turkey Song' preceded 'Looking At You'. Damned fan Johnno is invited on stage for his birthday prior to 'Smash It Up'.

Monday 7 December - Metropolitan University, Leeds

Set: I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Dozen Girls, Melody Lee, Plan 9 Channel 7, Wait For The Blackout, Shadow of Love, Disco Man, Neat Neat Neat, Curtain Call, Noise Noise Noise, Looking At You. encore - New Rose, Eloise, Love Song, Smash It Up.

Comments: The opening to 'Shadow Of Love' was 'Rawhide'.

Thursday 12 November - Waterfront, Norwich

Set included: I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Wait For The Blackout, Curtain Call, Plan 9 Channel 7, Noise Noise Noise, Disco Man, Neat Neat Neat, New Rose, Eloise, Shadow Of Love, Happy Talk, Love Song, Smash It Up, Looking At You, Dozen Girls, Melody Lee.

Comments: Support from Jolt.

Thursday 5 - Sunday 8 November - Greece

Comments: CANCELLED.

Saturday 24 October - Grosse Freiheit 36, Hamburg, Germany

Set: unknown.

Comments: This was a one-off German gig, not part of a tour.

Friday 10 July - The Astoria, London

Set: I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Dozen Girls, Melody Lee, Plan 9 Channel 7, Wait For The Blackout, Disco Man, Dr. Jekyll & Mr Hyde, Neat Neat Neat, Curtain Call, Noise Noise Noise, Looking At You. encore - Eloise, Smash It Up.

Comments: Support from Penthouse and The Ice Mummies. This show was scheduled for the main Astoria, but was moved to the, smaller, Astoria 2 - downstairs at the same venue. Following the inro music, Captain Sensible did a short piece of 'Happy Talk'. 'Dr. Jekyll & Mr Hyde' under rehearsed?... Patricia first, then others got lost. A drunken Max Splodge joined the band on stage to sing 'Eloise' (badly... he didn't know the words). Audience members on stage for 'Smash It Up'. Setlist included 'New Rose', 'Ignite', 'Love Song' and 'Shadow of Love' - none of which were played.

Saturday 20 June - The Dome, Morecambe (Zeitgeist '98)

Set: unknown.

Comments: This 2-day festival included appearances by Gene Love Zezebel, Marionettes and Sensorium, whilst some other early advertised bands, Rosetta Stone and Die Laughing, cancelled their appearances prior to the event.

Thursday 30 April - Mechanics, Burnley

Set: Plan 9 Channel 7, Dozen Girls, Neat Neat Neat, Wait For The Blackout, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Disco Man, Shadow Of Love, Curtain Call, Noise Noise Noise, Melody Lee, Looking At You. encore - New Rose, Eloise.

Comments: Advertising indicated the support as The Ice Mummies and Wilson - however, Captain Sensible can clearly be heard in a recording of this show saying "This is Laurie from the Ice Mummies, they were going to play tonight but...", so whether The Ice Mummies, or Wilson, performed as support is in doubt. The mention of Dangerous Dave and the Cardinal on the poster that accompanied the gig was apparently just bad research by the promoter, it was simply the Garrie Dreadful-era line up.A snippet of 'The Snooker Song' was sung prior to 'Noise Noise Noise'.. The gig was curtailed during 'Eloise' - a contributor to this site says "the show almost ended up in a massive punch-up as Dave Vanian offered the idiots in the audience out for a fight after they had been winding the band up all night" The last words from the stage (promoter?) were "No one every plays in Burnley... and now you know why".

Saturday 25 April - Grimsby College

Set: unknown.

Comments: There is photograpic evidence on the worldwide web to show that this gig went ahead.

Friday 24 April - The Future Club, Derby

Set: Plan 9 Channel 7, Dozen Girls, Neat Neat Neat, Wait For The Blackout, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Disco Man, Shadow Of Love, Curtain Call, Noise Noise Noise, Melody Lee, Looking At You. encore 1 - New Rose, Eloise. encore 2 - Happy Talk, Love Song, Smash It Up.

Comments: Much on stage banter, mainly directed towards it being The Captain's birthday. Both Johnno and Roy (Captain Barrington White from The Dr Spacetoad Experience) appeared on stage during the evening.

Friday 17 April - The Pitz, Woughton Centre, Milton Keynes

Set: Plan 9 Channel 7, Dozen Girls, Neat Neat Neat, Wait For The Blackout, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Disco Man, Shadow of Love, Curtain Call, Noise Noise Noise, Melody Lee, Looking At You. encore 1 - New Rose, Eloise. encore 2 - Love Song, Smash It Up.

Comments: Support from The Ice Mummies. There was much banter at this gig... including Gary Dreadful's Bee Gees renditions. This show was originally scheduled for Saturday 28 March (tickets at the time show this date crossed out with the new date written in).

Thursday 16 April - Rios, Bradford

Set: Plan 9 Channel 7, Dozen Girls, Neat Neat Neat, Wait For The Blackout, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Disco Man, Shadow of Love, Curtain Call, Noise Noise Noise, Melody Lee, Looking At You. encore 1 - New Rose, Eloise. encore 2 - Happy Talk, Love Song, Smash It Up.

Monday 13 April - Recreation Centre, Bridgend

Set: unknown.

Comments: Support from Doc Savage. Gig known to have taken place.

Sunday 12 April - The Bierkeller, Bristol

Set: unknown.

Comments: Support from The Ice Mummies, Lux, and The Bolshaviks.

Saturday 11 April - The Pirate Inn, Falmouth

Set: Plan 9 Channel 7, Dozen Girls, Neat Neat Neat, Wait For The Blackout, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Disco Man, Shadow of Love, Curtain Call, Noise Noise Noise, Melody Lee, Looking At You. encore 1 - New Rose, Eloise. encore 2 - Love Song, Smash It Up.

Comments: Support from Stimulator. A snippet of 'The Snooker Song' following 'Wait For The Blackout'. Two false starts to 'Melody Lee'.

Friday 10 April - The Arts Centre, Poole

Set included: Plan 9 Channel 7 (opened), Dozen Girls, Melody Lee, Eloise, Shadow of Love, Neat Neat Neat, New Rose, Curtain Call, Noise Noise Noise.

Thursday 9 April - The Wedgewood Rooms, Portsmouth

Set: unknown.

Tuesday 7 April - JB's, Dudley

Set included: Plan 9 Channel 7, Dozen Girls, Neat Neat Neat, Wait For The Blackout, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Disco Man, Shadow Of Love, Curtain Call, Noise Noise Noise, Melody Lee, Looking At You, New Rose, Eloise.

Comments: While the set above is in the correct running order, it is assumed that it is incomplete - presumably an encore of 'Love Song' and 'Smash It Up' was played as with other shows at this time.

Monday 6 April - The Wheatsheaf, Stoke On Trent

Set: Plan 9 Channel 7, Disco Man, Neat Neat Neat, Wait For The Blackout, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Dozen Girls, Shadow of Love, Noise Noise Noise, Melody Lee, Looking At You, New Rose, Eloise. encore - Love Song, Smash It Up.

Comments: 'Disco Man' was introduced as 'Dozen Girls'. There was a false start to 'Looking At You'. Some sources say 'Curtain Call' was played prior to 'Noise Noise Noise' but a bootleg of the gig with a poor cut at that point, clearly indicates audience members shouting for 'Curtain Call' later in the set. In view of the discrepancies previously mentioned, it seems worth including the written setlist for the night (which it looks like they deviated from): Plan 9 Channel 7, Dozen Girls, Neat Neat Neat, Wait For The Blackout, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Disco Man, Shadow of Love, Curtain Call, Noise Noise Noise, Melody Lee, Looking At You, New Rose, Eloise, Love Song, Smash It Up, Ignite, I Feel Alright.

Thursday 2 April - Bradford

Comments: RESCHEDULED for 16 April.

Monday 30 March - JB's, Dudley

Comments: This gig did not take place as The Damned had only just finished US dates and would go on to play JB's on the rearranged date of 7 April.

Sunday 29 March - Galaxy Theatre, Santa Ana, California

Set included: Melody Lee, Curtain Call, Neat Neat Neat, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Smash It Up (ended the show).

Comments: 11 Song set. Patricia Morrison apparently played the wrong song when she should have been playing 'I Just Can't Be Happy Today'. Patricia spat on during 'Melody Lee' (took the mike afterwards and complained). Gary Dreadful played 'Singalongascabies' during a set break.

Saturday 28 March - Phoenix Theatre, Petaluma, California

Set: included: Plan 9 Channel 7, Dozen Girls, Neat Neat Neat, Wait For The Blackout, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Disco Man, Shadow of Love, Curtain Call, Noise Noise Noise, Melody Lee, Looking At You.

Comments: Support from The Aldermen and Jinx. The Aldermen played Smash It Up (part 1) during their set. 'Eloise' was first attempted following 'New Rose' but abandoned due to sound problems. 'Love Song' was played instead at this point and then 'Eloise' was played once the sound issues had been rectified.
