Comments: Xmas Be Damned gig. Support on the night was from local band - Spittin' Blood. The source cassette that the set above is taken from cuts out during 'I Feel Alright', so it is possible that further numbers followed There were numerous encores, beginning with 'Smash It Up' it appears, but these are hard to distinguish on the source tape. From 'Burglar' prior to 'I Just Can't Be Happy Today', various members of the band took to the stage to do 'a turn' with much interspersed banter - Rat Scabies played a tune before breaking into 'Burglar' and finishing with the first few notes of 'Wild Thing', Captain Sensible performed 'Blue Is The Colour' and 'Happy Talk' and Roman Jugg (?) led a musical sing-a-long Sensible's A Wanker, followed by Scabies Is A Wanker.

Comments: Xmas Be Damned gig. Support confirmed as Western Promise and The Volcanoes. The drummer of The Volcanoes said of the show... 'The main thing I remember about that particular gig is the stage being like an ice rink when we came on due to the amount of gob, which I thought was horrible and a very strange pastime'. There was initially a false start by the Captain to 'Hippy Hippy Shake', leading to much banter... and ultimately a short but loud rendition of Sensible's A W...... from the audience.
Tuesday 27 December 1983 - Brannigan's, LeedsComments: A gig poster from the time lists The Damned to play Brannigan's on this date - however, the entry has been deleted. Presumably an intended show that was either cancelled or never confirmed.

'Happy Talk' had Roman on bass, 'Wild Thing' had Rat on guitar and vocals, Roman on drums.

Comments: Beast and The Volcano's supported. First live performance of Do The Blitz. A contributor to this site wrote 'Dave Vanian came on stage with his gloves on fire, very dramatic, but struggled to put out the flames and did look a bit worried. I also remember several punks uprooting some plastic palm trees and crowdsurfing them!'.

Sunday 4 September 1983 - LondonComments: The New Musical Express (NME) music paper of 20 August 1983 indicated London ticket availability for The Damned on 4 September. Though this is assumed to have just been an error, it is included here for reference purposes.

Thursday 16 June 1983 - Ontario Theatre, Washington
Set: unknown.
Comments: Support from Anti Nowhere League and Minor Threat II.
Tuesday 14 June 1983 - Phantasy Night Club, Lakewood, Cleveland, Ohio
Set: unknown.
Comments: Intended support from Zara. A contibutor to this site wrote - 'The show was set for the Phantasy Theatre that held 1500 people, but was moved to the Phantasy Night Club that was upstairs from the theatre. The reason was due to poor ticket sales. The show was almost cancelled but with a week before the show it was moved to the smaller venue. I cannot say why the audience was so small, but it was around 75 people. I remember after the show the Captain was buck naked in the kitchen and offered me his guitar if I could find him a joint. A great band, the best of the 76 -77 class, great people, I wish that I had seen them on the 1979 tour! PS - Another memory from that show, while stage diving, in mid-air, I looked down at my shirt, it was full of blood and had an ear attached to it. Someone else that was diving must have gotten their earing caught on my shirt, and left the ear ring, blood and a good chunk of ear along with it.'
Tuesday 14 June 1983 - Phantasy Theatre, Lakewood, Cleveland, OhioComments: Venue altered to the Phantasy Night Club due to poor ticket sales.
Monday 13 June 1983 - The Living Room, Providence, Rhode Island
Set included: Ignite (opener).
Comments: Support from Rash of Stabbings. The set has been 'reported as' the same as 17 June, with the addition of 'Wipe Out' (ending the set). Apparently Springa from the band SS Decontrol got onstage and did 'the swim' during 'Wipe Out'.
Saturday 11 June 1983 - Brooklyn Zoo, New York
Set: unknown.
Friday 10 June 1983 - St. Andrews Hall, Detroit, Michigan
Set included: I'm a Believer.
Thursday 9 June 1983 - The Continental, Buffalo, New York
Set: unknown.
Comments: Gig confirmed as having taken place.
Wednesday 8 June 1983 - Cabaret Metro, Chicago, Illinois
Set: Ignite, Disco Man, Generals, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Stranger On The Town, Wait For The Blackout, Plan 9 Channel 7, Born To Kill, The Limit Club, Melody Lee, Love Song, Looking At You. encore 1 - Smash It Up, Neat Neat Neat, New Rose. encore 2 - Noise Noise Noise, Hippy Hippy Shake, I Feel Alright.
Comments: There were 2 false starts to 'Noise Noise Noise'.
Monday 6 June 1983 - The Vex, Los Angeles, California
Set: unknown.
Comments: Support advertised as Social Distortion (note that the support was originally listed here as being Skoundrelz... but it is no longer clear where this information was obtained from). Apparently The Damned were to play 2 shows - one at 20:30 and another at 22:30.
Sunday 5 June 1983 - Country Club, Reseda, California
Set: Ignite, Disco Man, Generals, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Stranger On The Town, Wait For The Blackout, Plan 9 Channel 7, Born To Kill, Limit Club, Melody Lee, Love Song, Looking At You, New Rose, Neat Neat Neat, Noise Noise Noise, Hippy Hippy Shake, I Feel Alright, Happy Talk, I'm A Believer, Wild Thing, Love Song (again), Stranger on the Town (reprise of chorus).
Comments: Support from Grand Manner. First known airing of I'm a Believer. Roman Jugg on guitar for I'm A Believer. For Wild Thing... Rat Scabies on guitar & vocals whilst Captain Sensible was on drums and vocals. Note, that comments regarding 'I'm A Believer' and 'Wild Thing' are taken from a bootleg recording of the show, however, a contributor to this site wrote 'I was at the Saturday show...but everything you have written for the Sunday show happened during the Saturday show. I remember the switching of instruments and specifically the 'I'm a Believer' Monkees cover. This could have brought into question whether the date of the bootleg was correct and whether the recording was actually from 4 June but, at the end of the show, a band member can clearly be heard saying "see you tomorrow night at The Vex Club", indicating that the set IS from the 5 June. Therefore it seems likely, that though the Captain referred to 'I'm A Believer' being played for the first time, that it was actually played 2 nights in a row... as was 'Wild Thing'.
Saturday 4 June 1983 - Country Club, Reseda, California
Set: unknown.
Comments: Advertised support from The Brat. Show and support confirmed as having taken place by a contributor to this site who wrote - 'I was at the Saturday show, The Brat indeed opened, but everything you have written for the Sunday show happened during the Saturday show. I remember the switching of instruments and specifically the 'I'm a Believer' Monkees cover. Great night indeed'. [see also the comments for Country Club, Resada on 5 June].
Friday 3 June 1983 - Eagles Hippodrome, Seattle
Set included: Ignite (opener), Generals, Stranger On The Town, Dozen Girls, New Rose, So Messed Up, Neat Neat Neat, Smash It Up.
Comments: In the early 1980s many punk, new-wave and early rap artists performed at what its promoters called the Eagles Hippodrome. The last rock concert at the Eagles Hippodrome featured The Damned. Support from Aerobic Death and (?) Memory.
Wednesday 1 June 1983 - Numbers, Westheimer, Houston, Texas
Set: unknown.
Comments: Gig confirmed as having taken place.
Monday 30 May 1983 - Fair Park Band Shell, Dallas, Texas
Set: unknown.
Sunday 29 May 1983 - Club Foot, Austin, Texas
Set: unknown.
Comments: A contributor to this site states that this show, not the Adams Avenue Theatre, was played on this date. Supposedly he also has a flyer for the gig. Apparently The Offenders were the support act.
Sunday 29 May 1983 - Adams Avenue Theatre, San Diego, CaliforniaComments: Details for this show are taken from the San Diego Concert Archive, however, it appears that the Club Foot, Austin Texas gig was actually played on this date. Advertising indicated that T.S.O.L. and Personal Conflict were due to support.
Friday 27 May 1983 - Network, Long Island, New York
Set: Ignite, Disco Man, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Wait For The Blackout, Stranger On The Town, Plan 9 Channel 7, Curtain Call, Born To Kill, Limit Club, Melody Lee, Love Song, Looking At You. encore 1 - Smash It Up, Neat Neat Neat, New Rose. encore 2 - Noise Noise Noise, Hippy Hippy Shake, I Feel Alright. encore 3 - Love Song.
Comments: A very small piece of 'Wot' preceded the second playing of Love Song'.
Friday 20 May 1983 - The Greyhound, FulhamComments: See Naz Nomad & The Nightmares.
Saturday 7 May 1983 - Brockwell Park (CND Festival)
Set: Neat Neat Neat, Disco Man, Wait For The Blackout, Ignite, Born To Kill, Limit Club, Love Song, Smash It Up, Noise Noise Noise, Stranger on the Town.
Comments: Bill included Hazel O' Connor, Madness and The Style Council. A correspondent wrote 'The Damned were on really early and lots of people missed them. Hence a bad atmosphere occured and fans who turned up late starting giving some of the acts a hard time. Hazel O`Connor was well pissed off. Mud etc was getting hurled, and loads of people started chanting 'we want The Damned'. John Peel came on and try to calm things by stating it was a Festival for peace. Madness got loads thrown at them too'.
Saturday 30 April 1983 - The Greyhound, FulhamComments: See Naz Nomad & The Nightmares.
Thursday 21 April 1983 - Greyhound, Hammersmith, London
Set: Smash It Up?
Comments: Part of Artists for Animals campaign (set up to abolish vivisection). Advertising for this show indicated Captain Sensible with Dolly Mixture, Benjamin Zephaniah and A Popular History Of Signs as the acts due to perform - however, a review of a Greyhound gig in the music press (New Musical Express of 21 May 1983) featuring the same artists [rather a coincidence unless a further show was played the next month with the same contributing artists!? ...Oh and there was no obvious booking for a separate show in Fulham advertising for May], stated that the Captain compered throughout the show and also ready some poetry on the subject matter, that Dolly Mixture played in their own right, and that The Damned actually appeared as the final act... just playing 'Smash It Up'. Of course, there is nothing to say that all members of The Damned were present...?
Friday 25 March 1983 - Goldiggers, Chippenham
Set: Ignite, Disco Man, Generals, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Plan 9 Channel 7, Stranger On The Town, Wait For The Blackout, Born To Kill, Bad Time For Bonzo, Limit Club, Melody Lee, Looking At You, Love Song, Neat Neat Neat, New Rose, Smash It Up, Hippy Hippy Shake, Noise Noise Noise, Happy Talk, Love Song, So What, Shakin' All Over.
Comments: Last gig of tour. Support from Anti-Nowhere League. So What with Anti-Nowhere League and Rat Scabies playing guitar.
Thursday 24 March 1983 - The Ace, Brixton, London
Set: Ignite, Disco Man, Generals, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Stranger On The Town, Wait For The Blackout, Born To Kill, Curtain Call, Bad Time For Bonzo, Melody Lee, Looking At You, Love Song. encore 1 - Neat Neat Neat, New Rose, Smash It Up. encore 2 - Hippy Hippy Shake, Noise Noise Noise, Happy Talk.
Comments: Support from Johnny Moped. Apparently over 1000 people were turned away from this sell-out concert.
Wednesday 23 March 1983 - Dingwalls, Sheffield
Set: Ignite, Disco Man, Generals, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Plan 9 Channel 7, Stranger On The Town, Wait For The Blackout, Born To Kill, Bad Time For Bonzo, Limit Club, Melody Lee, Looking At You, Love Song, Neat Neat Neat, New Rose, Smash It Up, Noise Noise Noise, Hippy Hippy Shake, Happy Talk.
Tuesday 22 March 1983 - Dingwalls, Newcastle
Set: Ignite, Disco Man, Generals, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Plan 9 Channel 7, Stranger On The Town, Wait For The Blackout, Born To Kill, Bad Time For Bonzo, Limit Club, Melody Lee, Looking At You, Love Song, Neat Neat Neat, New Rose, Smash It Up, Noise Noise Noise, Hippy Hippy Shake, Happy Talk.
Comments: Support on the night was from The Threats. A contributor to this site states "Although the venue was sold out well in advance, bouncers taking backhanders let in an estimated 400 punters on the night. It was ridiculous, the stage barrier collapsed, PA fucked up, and the place ended up trashed!" Another contributor wrote "The ceiling also partly caved in as well! Earlier, while waiting outside in the queue in the freezing cold, Rat and the Captain came out and announced that they were going to the 'Dog & Parrot' to drink real ale and off they went down the street. The gig was really late starting as a result" The was no obvious encore break on the recording that this set was sourced from.
Monday 21 March 1983 - Dingwalls, Hull
Set: Ignite, Disco Man, Generals, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Stranger On The Town, Wait For The Blackout, Born To Kill, Bad Time For Bonzo, Limit Club, Melody Lee, Plan 9 Channel 7, Looking At You, New Rose. encore 1 - Smash It Up, Neat Neat Neat. encore 2 - Love Song, Hippy Hippy Shake, Noise Noise Noise, Happy Talk.
Comments: Due to time restraints the band did not leave the stage after the first encore, instead saying "we'll play the second encore now".
Saturday 19 March 1983 - City Hall, St. Albans
Set: Ignite, Disco Man, Generals, Stranger On The Town, I Just can't Be Happy Today, Stranger On The Town, Wait For The Blackout, Born To Kill, Bad Time For Bonzo, Limit Club, Melody Lee, Love Song, Neat Neat Neat, New Rose. encore 1 - Smash It Up, Looking At You. encore 2 - Hippy Hippy Shake, Noise Noise Noise, Happy Talk.
Comments: Bryn Merrick's first gig. Support from Sleep Eaters [members of The Barracudas with Nic Egan on vocals].
Friday 18 March 1983 - Goldiggers, ChippenhamComments: Tickets from the time show the date of this gig was amended from 18 to 25 March - so presumably the 18th was the originally intended date, but it was rescheduled for the 25th.
Thursday 17 March 1983 - Warwick University, CoventryComments: Two lots of advertising appeared for 17 March - Loughborough University and Warwick University - and it is not currently clear which superseded which. However, bassist Paul Gray had left the band by this time to join UFO. Replacement bassist Bryn Merrick's first Damned gig is known to have been at St Albans on 19 March, so it is assumed that neither 17 March date came to fruition.
Thursday 17 March 1983 - Loughborough UniversityComments: Two lots of advertising appeared for 17 March - Loughborough University and Warwick University - and it is not currently clear which superseded which. Saturday 5 February 1983 - Rock Ola, Madrid, Spain
Set: Ignite, Disco Man, Generals, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Stranger On The Town, Wait For The Blackout, Bad Time For Bonzo, Limit Club, Melody Lee, Love Song, New Rose. encore 1 - Smash It Up, Noise Noise Noise, Looking At You, Neat Neat Neat. encore 2 - Ballroom Blitz, Hippy Hippy Shake, Happy Talk.
Comments: A short piece of Y Viva Espana was played prior to Ballroom Blitz.
Friday 4 February 1983 - Rock Ola, Madrid, Spain
Set: Ignite, Disco Man, Generals, I Just Can't Be Happy Today, Stranger On The Town, Wait For The Blackout, Bad Time For Bonzo, Limit Club, Melody Lee, Love Song, New Rose. encore 1 - Noise Noise Noise, Smash It Up, Looking At You, Hippy Hippy Shake. encore 2 - Neat Neat Neat, Ballroom Blitz.
Comments: A short piece of Y Viva Espana was played prior to Noise Noise Noise.
