Captain Sensible: Solo & Beyond... (1994)

This listing of appearances by Captain Sensible for 1994 is almost certainly incomplete and should be considered as 'work in progress'.

Comments: Captain Sensible played bass with Attila The Stockbroker's and his band Flounder at their earliest 2 shows - this was the second such show [Attila's band would soon be renamed Barnstormer].

Comments: Captain Sensible played bass with Attila The Stockbroker's and his band Flounder at their earliest 2 shows - this was the first such show [Attila's band would soon be renamed Barnstormer].

Comments: First night of Japanese tour by Newell's Alien Allstars [see further comments]. In a Cherry Red interview, and in an article published in The Independent on 29 September 1994, Martin Newell refers to this band that toured in Japan as Newell's Alien Allstars, however, there are also references 'out there' to suggest that they toured as The Humbug Allstars, and a partial release was made of one concert as The Cleaners From Venus.

* (as) Captain Sensible

Saturday 23 April 1994 - Hammersmith Apollo, London

Set: Happy Talk.

Comments: Mick Ronson Memorial Concert. When asked about his appearance at this show, the Captain stated "Yes, I did this one, afterall Mick Ronson had 'lent' us his Mesa Boogie Mk2 (I think it was) that we [The Damned] used on Machine Gun Etiquette. How fab did that sound?...He sent someone round to pick the thing up when he found out where it was though, lol. Anyway, Johnny Moped and I were going to perform Mick's fave - 'Darling Let's Have Another Baby' at the memorial. Google it... it's actually true - he really did love the song, performing it live many a time himself! So, there I am at the gig, in the wings, waiting for Moped, counting off the minutes until my call and of course the great (and somewhat chaotic) man messed up his trains or something - and finally I heard myself being announced. What to do? Which is what I asked Spacetoad colleague and all round loonie Captain Roy, who was standing next to me, and gamely joined me for a bizarre improvised version of 'Happy Talk', which he patently didn't know. I vaguely remember him attempting some ballet moves at one point."

Saturday 19 February 1994 - The Oval Rock House, Norwich

Set: Jet Boy Jet Girl, Smash It Up (part 2 only), Back To School, Come On Geoffrey Brown, Happy Talk, Kamikaze Millionaire, Exploding Heads & Teapots, Love Song, Neat Neat Neat, New Rose. encore - Wot, Whole Lotta Love (but see comments).

Comments: Support from The Cuban Heels. The audio that this set is taken from is extracted from video - Wot was incomplete, as was Whole Lotta Love - it is possible that further songs were played before and / or after Whole Lotta Love.

Friday 18 February 1994 - The Forum, Tunbridge Wells

Set: Jet Boy Jet Girl, Smash It Up (Part 2 only), Come On Geoffrey Brown, Happy Talk, Kamikaze Millionaire, Exploding Heads & Teapots, Love Song, Neat Neat Neat, New Rose. encore 1 - Wot, Looking At You, Hey Joe. encore 2 -Glad It's All Over, Wake Me Up (Before You Go-Go).

Comments: FU Chickens also on the bill?

Setlist: Jet Boy Jet Girl, Smash It Up, Back To School, Come On Geoffrey Brown, Happy Talk, Kamikaze Millionaire, Exploding Heads & Teapots, Love Song, Glad It's All Over, Neat Neat Neat, New Rose. encore - Wot, Looking At You.

Comments: Advertised support was from Jackdaw Music. Based on other sets of the time, 'Smash It Up' is likely to have been Part 2 only.

Saturday 12 February 1994 - Rock City, Nottingham

Set: Jet Boy Jet Girl, Smash It Up (part 2 only), Back To School, Come On Geoffrey Brown, Happy Talk, Kamikaze Millionaire, Exploding Heads And Teapots, Love Song, Neat Neat Neat, New Rose. encore - Wot, Looking At You, Hey Joe.

Comments: A parody based on 'Lady In Red' preceded 'New Rose'. Approximately 5 minutes of musical 'nonsense' and other on-stage antics preceded 'Wot', including a parody of 'Honky Tonk Woman'.
